Who We Are
Gym Floor Inspectors LLC was founded in 2004 by Floyd Shelton. A pioneer in the industry, Floyd owned his own sports floor manufacturing company under the name of Superior Floor Co, Inc. for nearly 20 years before selling Superior Floor in 2004. In 2005 he started Arizona Gym Floors, LLC in Scottsdale, Arizona and sold the company in 2024. He holds seven sports floor patents, established the world’s only gym flooring installation school, and has taught over 1500 students the proper technique of sports floor installation.
Our certified trained inspectors:
- Consult with owners and architects in the design and selection of wood flooring for their gymnasium, stage, or home.
- Consult with contractors regarding proper installation.
- Act as an owner’s reprehensive inspector during flooring installation.
- Inspect gymnasium flooring in schools and major universities, as well as residential wood flooring.
- Serve as expert witnesses in several litigation cases.
Why Does Nationwide Gym Floor Experience Matter?
A maple gym floor in Florida may face different environmental conditions than one installed in Arizona, the Midwest, or the Northeast. Humidity, seasonal temperature changes, building operation, installation conditions, and moisture exposure can all influence how an athletic flooring system performs.
Although we are based in Fort Myers, Florida, our inspection work extends across the United States. That experience gives us exposure to gym flooring systems operating under a wide variety of climates, facility types, construction methods, and environmental conditions.
We have completed more than 170 inspections nationwide, and our experience extends beyond inspecting completed floors. Our background includes sports floor manufacturing, installation education, consulting with owners and architects, contractor consultation, installation oversight, and expert witness work. Because we remain independent from contractors and manufacturers, our recommendations are based on what we observe in the flooring system. Our goal is to give facility owners objective information they can use to understand the problem and determine the appropriate next step.
