Floor Problems &

Buckling

Do you have a maple wood sports floor experiencing buckling problems? Gym Floor Inspectors can tell you exactly why your floor is buckling.

Why Maple Sports Floors Buckle

Buckling, or floor expansion, can happen for various reasons. The typical reason floors expand is that they have gained more moisture than the installer allowed for at the time of installation. When maple sports floors gain too much moisture, the floor will begin to buckle.

In other cases, buckling can be due to outside influences such as stopped up drains, broken water fountains, water leaking under the floor, or too much humidity in the room.

Prevent Gym Floor Buckling

More times than not, maple sports floors buckle due to lack of moisture control. Most floors expand and buckle because the installer did not take to account the change in humidity. On the other hand, your gym floor could have too many gaps in it because it was installed at too high of a moisture content. Hitting the right moisture content is an integral part of installing your sports floor, and Gym Floor Inspectors can guarantee the job is done correctly. We can also inspect a floor to prove where a floor has buckled or expanded due to installer error, which in many cases it is!

Repair, Restoration & Replacement

Can a Buckled Gym Floor Be Repaired Without Replacing the Entire Floor?

A buckled maple gym floor doesn’t automatically require complete replacement. The appropriate solution depends on what caused the flooring to expand, how extensive the movement is, and whether other components of the flooring system have been damaged.

Moisture is one of the most common causes of buckling. High indoor humidity can cause maple to absorb moisture and expand, while leaks, blocked drains, damaged water fountains, and water entering beneath the floor can create more localized problems.

When humidity is responsible and the damage hasn’t progressed too far, correcting environmental conditions and providing appropriate expansion space may sometimes help address the problem. Water intrusion or significant structural damage can require a different repair approach.

The important step is determining the cause before authorizing repairs. Simply replacing visibly damaged boards without addressing excessive humidity, a leak, inadequate expansion space, or an installation problem can allow the issue to return. An independent gym floor inspection can evaluate moisture conditions and the flooring system to determine whether localized repair, more extensive restoration, or replacement is appropriate.

how can florida humidity affect maple gym floors?

Maple sports flooring naturally expands and contracts as moisture conditions change. In Southwest Florida, where outdoor humidity remains high for significant portions of the year, controlling the indoor environment is an important part of protecting a gym floor.

When maple absorbs excessive moisture, the flooring can expand. If the system does not have sufficient room for that movement, boards may begin to buckle. High humidity is not the only possible cause, so identifying the actual source of the moisture is important before determining how the problem should be corrected.

Our independent inspections evaluate the flooring conditions to help determine why buckling or expansion has occurred. We can investigate moisture levels, environmental conditions, installation practices, water intrusion, and other factors that may be contributing to the problem. Understanding the cause allows facility owners to make decisions based on the actual condition of the flooring rather than assuming visible buckling automatically means the entire floor needs replacement.
